St. Odilia (Gohr)
St. Odilia is the Roman Catholic parish church of Gohr , a district of Dormagen in the Rhine district of Neuss . It is also a pilgrimage church because of a relic of Odile .
history
The Romanesque components of the nave and choir of the Gohrer Odilienkirche date from the 12th century. The church was initially only mentioned as a court chapel and was raised to a parish church around 1300. The possession of the court by the Cologne cathedral dean has been documented since the 13th century. What is unusual for a Romanesque basilica in the region is that it was built without a west tower and with a just closed choir. The Odilien pilgrimage, which still exists today, has been documented in Gohr since 1497.
In 1652 the aisles were renewed and two pillars in the nave were removed. In 1846, through the mediation of the Strasbourg bishop, the church received a relic of St. Odilia from her burial place in the Odilienberg monastery . From 1891 to 1893 the original Romanesque building was reconstructed after an initially planned demolition of the church and a large western building with a tower, transept and vestibule in neo-Romanesque forms was added.
