St. Oswald is the Catholic parish church of Knottenried , a district of Immenstadt in the Allgäu . The building is a listed building .

history

The first known mention of the parish of Knottenried comes from the year 1275. At that time it appeared under the name "Clottenried" in the directories of the parishes that belonged to the diocese of Constance . Since 1353 the settlement was called "Knottenriet".

The fact that Oswald was elected as patron of the church in Knottenried is perhaps due to the fact that the parish was under the patronage of the Benedictine monastery Weingarten in the Middle Ages : Oswald was highly venerated by the Benedictine missionaries from England and Scotland.

The parish of Knottenried became a fiefdom of the nobles of Prassberg together with other estates in 1520 and later passed into the hands of the Königsegger . The Königsegg-Rothenfels parish of Knottenried and the Abbey-Skempt parish of Diepolz were merged in 1672. It was not until 1863 that each of the two parishes was given its own pastor again.

When exactly the Knottenried Church was built is unknown. The nave dates from before 1300. In the second half of the 15th century the sacristy extension with its half-timbered gable was added. In 1661 the nave was extended to the west. The annex through which the church is accessed dates from 1749.

The walls of the choir were renewed in 1958. In the following years up to 1960, the ornamental painting that the church had received in the late 19th century was removed as part of an interior restoration by Joseph Schugg. From 1985 to 1987 the church was renovated inside and out. On this occasion, part of the seating was renewed.

The square, shingled roof turret of the church with a pointed helmet made of copper sheet is late Gothic in the complex .

Furnishing

The nave of the church has a square paneled panel ceiling; former paintwork was removed. A new panel ceiling was put in behind the choir arch in the east. In front of the pulpit on the left wall is a statue of St. Blaise . This work of art does not belong to the original furnishings of the church. Opposite him on the right nave wall has been a figure of Maria von La Salette since 1877 , donated by Maria Anna Hirnbein from Knottenried and carved by Johann Petz from Munich . The rectory in Knottenried keeps tablets on which pilgrims have testified that their prayers have been answered. Knottenried is still a destination for pilgrimages.

A baroque cross that hangs between the lead-glazed arched windows dates from the first half of the 18th century.

The two side altars dedicated to Joseph and Mary were created around 1700. They are each provided with four marbled columns. The high altar also has four columns. It dates from the late 17th century. The altarpiece shows the crucified Savior. It is flanked by the figures of St. Ulrich with a fish in hand and St. Oswald. Ulrich is the patron saint of the Diocese of Augsburg . Oswald, who does not belong to the canon of the 14 emergency helpers , was highly valued in the German-speaking Alpine countries and was often included among the emergency helpers instead of the rather unknown saints. The popular altar is modern. It comes from Theo Weh from Reute; its front wall was made from a coffered ceiling from an old farmhouse in Reute. Reute, which belongs to the parish of Knottenried, has a Lady Chapel, which probably dates from the 19th century. There is a Gothic figure of St. Oswald, which originally stood in the parish church in Knottenried, and also a Gothic St. Ulrich from Knottenried. The two statues now serve as side figures of the altar in Reute.

The ringing consists of three bells , two of which are from 1987.
