Old Church of St. Peter and Paul

In Donndorf , a district of the town of Roßleben-Wiehe in the Kyffhäuserkreis ( Thuringia ), two Protestant churches are named after the saints St. Peter and Paul .

Old Church of St. Peter and Paul

The old church of St. Peter and Paul was mentioned in a document in 1253 as a parish church, it is in the old cemetery. 51 ° 17 ′ 49 ″ N, 11 ° 22 ′ 37 ″ E

After the demolition of the nave in the early 19th century, only the square choir tower from the 13th century and the wider choir from the 14th century with a 5/8 polygon are preserved. The ogival triumphal arch can be seen in the wall. The bell storey with coupled round arched sound arcades jumps back. The Gothic storey above protrudes slightly, the windows were probably originally pointed arches. A ribbed vault was installed in the choir, and there is a beamed ceiling in the choir tower.

The late Gothic carved altar was made after the middle of the 15th century and extensively restored in 1956. The coronation of Mary and six apostles can be seen in the middle part, three female and three male saints are located on the wings, the predella with the veil of Veronica is painted.

New Church of St. Peter and Paul

New Church of St. Peter and Paul

The new Church of St. Peter and Paul is a large hall church with a retracted rectangular choir and apse. It was built in 1856, probably based on designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, in a round arch style. 51 ° 17 ′ 34 ″ N, 11 ° 22 ′ 19 ″ E The inauguration took place on May 18, 1856. The eaves embedded in the top of the wall had not been cleaned for a long time and so water penetrated the building and partially destroyed it. On August 17, 1978 the roof collapsed and crashed into the ship. The damaged spire was removed on September 20 and 21. Until 1995, the building was largely unsecured in its place, with extensive renovation and security measures, both the tower and the ship received new roofs.

The community belongs to the Eisleben-Sömmerda parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .
