St. Petrus in Ketten is a former Roman Catholic church in the Blieshaben-Bolchen district of the Mandelbachtal community in Saarland . It is listed as an individual monument and is now used as the community's cemetery chapel.

history

The oldest part of the church dates from the 14th century. The present church was built in 1752 and extended to the north in 1866. During the Second World War, the building was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in 1948 under the direction of the St. Ingbert architect Ludwig Kreischer . In the 1970s, the church became too small for the rapidly growing congregation: the new St. Paulus Church was built. St. Petrus in Ketten became a cemetery chapel in 1972. The building in the west was shortened in 1971 and the old facade was restored. The high altar, which originally came from the Gräfinthal monastery and was erected in Blieshaben-Bolchen in 1785, was moved to the new church. At the same time, a modern extension was created in the east for laying out coffins.

In 2008/09 the church was extensively restored. The sandstone walls of the sacristy door from the 15th century at the apex of the choir were discovered and exposed.

architecture

The south-facing plastered building with a hipped roof and low sandstone base is entered via a north portal. In the south, the aisle church closes with a three-sided choir, to which the tower is connected with a square floor plan. The oldest part of the building are the two basement floors of the three-story tower with Gothic pointed arched windows. The dome of the tower was originally crowned by a closed octagonal lantern. Today this has been replaced by an open one.

Typical of the time of the Baroque is the Eckquaderung of sandstone. The tower is also structured by cornices. The long sides originally had three window axes with round arches. After the nave was shortened, two window axes remained. A further window with a round arch was inserted on each side of the choir.

The portal is on the north gable side. The entrance leads through stages in the jambs to the door. Above the portal there is a sandstone frame: A. 1866 + 1912 + 1971 D. Above a gable field with a straight, slightly profiled roof. In a further field above, based on the first words from John 10: 9: Ego sum ostium , crowned by a large Christ monogram . This area is protected by a throat-shaped overhang and decorated with geometric shapes. Simple pilaster strips frame the entire portal structure and form a large round arch with a bezel window .

In the south, the church building is adjoined by the district's cemetery.
