Church of St. Philip u. James

The Catholic parish church St. Philippus und Jakobus is a church in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Speicher in the Eifel , which was built from 1895 to 1896 by the cathedral builder Reinhold Wirtz .

history

Construction of the neo-Gothic church began in 1895 on the site of the old church from 1774. The first plan was for a three-aisled church. This plan was rejected because it provided for two towers and, according to the plan, the church would not have been deep enough for the intended width. Today's three-aisled church is approx. 25 m wide and 50 m long; the tower reaches a height of around 70 meters.

Furnishing

High altar

High altar

The 13 m high neo-Gothic winged altar from 1911 is outstanding. The more than fifty figures carved from wood depict events from the life of Jesus and the church. Richly carved ornaments, capitals, pinnacles and finials give the altar a special splendor.

organ

It was not until 1903, seven years after the consecration, that the church received the still existing pneumatic organ from the Johannes Klais company in Bonn. Even today the organ is almost in its original condition. It comprises 24 registers. In 1991/1992 the building company carried out a general restoration.

The bell ringing of the parish church includes four bells from 1947. All bells together weigh 86 quintals.
