St. Pius (Ingolstadt)

St. Pius is a Catholic parish church in the Piusviertel in the northwest of the city of Ingolstadt . The church patron is Pope Pius X , who was canonized in 1954. The parish belonging to it was the largest in the diocese of Eichstätt in 1999 with around 11,000 Catholics. In 2017 there were just under 7,000 Catholics.

History and architecture

The church was built from 1957 to 1958 according to the plans of the Ingolstadt architect Josef Elfinger and was inaugurated on August 31, 1958 by the then Eichstätt Bishop Joseph Schröffer .

Characteristic is the low, round design in combination with a hemispherical dome. The glass windows were created by Max Wendl .

The 32 m high bell tower was built as a free-standing campanile on the street; the inauguration of the bells took place on December 8, 1963.
