St. Remigius (Osthofen)
St Remigius (formerly Liebfrauen ) is a Roman Catholic church in Osthofen ( Alzey-Worms district ) in Rhineland-Palatinate . The church, which is essentially Gothic, goes back to a chapel belonging to a commander of the Templar order .
history
Today's Remigius Church was built as a Templar chapel at the end of the 13th century. Comparable to the Templar chapel in Iben , it had a stone roof turret that still rises above the west wall today. As in Iben, the roof turret is supported by two consoles over a pointed arch. The west wall is supported by Gothic buttresses and shows a walled-up ogival window. The nave walls and the choir, which is closed on three sides, were rebuilt in 1792 and still have a Gothic wall core. The holy Bishop Remigius of Reims was appointed as patron saint .
Today St. Remigius is one of the three churches in the Osthofen parish group within the diocese of Mainz .
The surrounding streets of Tempelgasse and Tempelgässchen are a reminder of those coming to the Templars .
