St. Salvator (Coburg)
St. Salvator is an Evangelical Lutheran cemetery church in Coburg , Untere Salvatorgasse 6.
The Salvatorfriedhof was created in 1494 on the edge of the Ketschenvorstadt as a replacement for the churchyard in the churchyard near the Morizkirche . In addition, a small building was built, the so-called preaching house. As a larger building, the Salvatorkirche , also known as Gottesacker Church, followed in the years 1660 to 1662 , which stood on the west side of the cemetery and was oriented to the south for reasons of space. To the north are the remaining crypt arcades . On September 5, 1662, the church was consecrated, which Duke Friedrich Wilhelm II also attended. In 1740 the church was given a sacristy to enable services during the renovation of the Morizkirche. In 1824 the old grave slabs were placed on the walls.
The western entrance to the Salvator Cemetery and the Salvator Church is formed by a portal with a figure of Christ. The cemetery was closed after the opening of the cemetery on Glockenberg in 1856 and has been a park since 1984.
The late Gothic hall church, 22.8 meters long and 11 meters wide, has a choir closed on three sides. The north side has two external wooden stairs leading to the gallery. Below is the main entrance with a wide, two-winged pointed arch portal. On the church roof there is a hexagonal, slated roof turret with an arcade top and a hood. Originally the hall church had a barrel vault and a wall painting with curtain motifs. During the last construction work, in the years 1961 to 1963, among other things, concrete struts and tie rods were installed to increase the stability and two choir windows were closed. The interior of the church also underwent major changes. A new organ gallery, a new altar and a half-height altar wall, consisting of a colored glass mosaic by the Coburg sculptor Koehler with depictions of Christ carrying the grave, the cross and the appearance of the risen Christ, were installed.
