The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Stephan is a late Gothic hall church in the Sulzbach am Inn district of Ruhstorf an der Rott in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau . It belongs to the parish association Ruhstorf an der Rott in the deanery Pocking of the diocese of Passau .

History and architecture

The parish was established in Sulzbach 788, and since 1188 the Benedictines - Monastery Vornbach incorporated . The parish has belonged to the Ruhstorf an der Rott parish association since 1974. The new building was carried out under Abbot Theodoric, who headed the monastery from 1439–1461, and was not completed until 1474 , according to a year painted on the west side of the choir arch . The upper part of the tower was destroyed by lightning after 1500 and then renewed. In 1970 the nave was extended to the west, whereby the arched gallery was removed.

The exterior of the church is structured with stepped buttresses ; on the north side of the choir stands the compact tower, which is closed off by a pointed helmet with hip gables. The interior is characterized by the late Gothic forms typical of the region. The choir consists of two yokes and ends in a five-eighth ending . The ribs of the net vault are caught by semicircular services , which are set up in front of the shield arch positions with a round bar profile. The nave is proportionally lower and considerably wider than the choir and was originally divided into four bays. The stitch cap vault is almost barrel-shaped and provided with a ribbed network. Strong shield arch positions with bevels with semicircular services in front to accommodate the ribs structure the side walls. In the choir, all rib crossings, in the nave only the crossings at the apex are provided with small, plate-shaped keystones . The tendril painting on the vault has been heavily renewed, medallions with the symbols of the evangelists are attached at the end of the choir . The two newly built yokes are clearly distinguishable from the original structure.
