history

inner space

As early as the 13th century, the Order of the Cross with the Red Star had a church built in the city center below Elbogen Castle . The patronage was given to the order by King Wenceslaus I of Bohemia . In 1248 Pope Innocent IV confirmed this donation. In 1473 it burned down. Nikolaus Schlick had it rebuilt in Gothic style in 1490 and set up a family crypt. In 1521 the Reformation , supported by Count Schlick , found its way into Elbogen. The church initially remained Catholic.

Until 1550, the mass was alternately held in Czech and German. In 1565 the Archbishop of Prague Anton Brus von Müglitz , who was also Grand Master General of the Order of the Cross, elevated the parish church to the Dechanteikirche . In addition to Elbogen itself, the parish also included the villages of Grünlas, Neusattl, Horn, Zech, Höfen, Nallesgrün and Dreihäuser. The church was used by the Protestants since 1594 and was re-Catholicized after the Battle of White Mountain .

Since the old church, which had become too small, no longer met the requirements, extensive renovations began in 1701. The construction work was interrupted during a city fire in 1725, whereby the previous building burned down completely. The new building in the Baroque style was started by the builder Wolfgang Braunbock and only finished in 1734 under his son Johann Andreas Braunbock.

From 1903 to 1905 a reconstruction took place in which the tower, which originally had a baroque onion dome, was given a pointed helmet . In 1930 the parish had 10,712 Catholics. Since May 3, 1958, the building has been on the state list of cultural monuments. The outer facade was restored in the 1990s. According to an inscription, Georg Popel von Lobkowicz is buried at the old church gate .

Furnishing

The baroque high altar from 1759 shows the painting “Assassination of St. Wenceslas” by the painter Peter Johann Brandl . The painted antependium “Holy Trinity” from 1744 was created by the artist Elias Dollhopf . The richly decorated side altars show a crucifix and a Madonna in the center.
