St. Winnow Church on the River Fowey

St. Winnow is an Anglican parish church of the Church of England in St Winnow, a small town directly on the estuary of the River Fowey south of Lostwithiel in Cornwall . The church has been classified as a Grade I cultural monument since 1964 .

history

The patronage of the church is not clear. It is either dedicated to the Breton Saint Guénolé (English Winwaloe ) or to Saint Winoc . Patronage of Guénolé is more likely, as a number of churches in the region are dedicated to the saint through the missionary work of monks from Landévennec Abbey .

The church probably goes back to a previous building of the 7th century, which is associated with St. Winoc. In the north wall of the nave, in the north transept and in the choir, traces of a later Norman church have been preserved, which was partially rebuilt in the 13th century. The tower, the south aisle and the vestibule were probably built in the 15th century. Parts of the north nave, the transept and the choir were rebuilt in the late 19th century and the large east window was added to the choir.
