St. Wolfgang

St. Wolfgang is a chapel in the Sigiswang district of Ofterschwang .

History and description

In 1529 Sigiswang came to Ofterschwang from the Seifriedsberg parish . In 1680 the chapel dedicated to St. Wolfgang was built. It has a retracted, three-sided closed choir with arched windows . The choir arch is also designed as a round arch. The west entrance has a segmented arch and a canopy from the late 19th century.

The altar of the chapel dates from the time the building was built. Its bell bears the inscription “Johannes Schirrmeister zu Kempten poured me in 1724”, but it was cast in 1922.

In 1981 the chapel was extensively renovated. The wooden floor and benches had to be replaced, and the corridor and chancel were covered with clinker tiles. The exterior plaster was renewed, new windows were installed and the bell tower was renewed. Coins, documents and a daily newspaper were deposited in the bell tower's sphere, which was covered with sheet copper.

At the beginning of 1983, seven figures of saints were stolen from the chapel. Only the statue of St. New Year's Eve , which was attached to the altar, did not fall victim to this theft. Donations from some local residents made it possible to purchase four new saints. They represent Florian , Wendelin , Rochus and Sebastian and were created by the sculptor Leismüller from Partenkirchen . They have been decorating the St. Wolfgang chapel since 1986.
