Church building

The St. Wolfgang Church was probably built by Hans Stiglitz von Miltenberg under the Prince Provost Albrecht von Rechberg in 1473, the year 1476 is given as the year of consecration. The church building is characterized by a four-storey west tower, which has a Gothic substructure and was later given a baroque octagonal top as a superstructure. A stone head attached to the window reveal of the lower south tower window immediately next to an old stonemason's mark is regarded as a portrait of the master builder Hans Stiglitz. The furnishings of the church were changed several times, most recently around 1900. Restoration work took place in 1967, in 2009 the south portal with the sandstone figures was restored.

Attractions

South portal of the Wolfgang Church

The sights of the Catholic Wolfgang Church include the grave slabs attached to the outside facade of the church and the south portal. This is adorned with a finial ornament and also bears sandstone figures of the church patrons St. Wolfgang, St. Ulrich and St. Lorenz in the tympanum . In the interior, the buttresses of the nave suggest a three-aisled hall. The choir has an ornate star rib vault that rests on consoles decorated with figures. The keystones of the choir vault show figures and the coats of arms of the donors and provosts. The choir is lit by tracery windows . The simple, but uniform and historically very important building contains the most important work of art: the Gothic Ellwang "crucifix" - named after the Ellwang artist Rudolf Kurz.

local community

On February 1, 1969, St. Wolfgang was elevated to the status of the second parish church in Ellwang, alongside the St. Vitus basilica. The St. Wolfgang parish in Ellwangen has around 3600 members and, in addition to parts of the city of Ellwangen, also includes the parishes of Schrezheim , Schleifhäusle, Rotenbach, Hinterlengenberg and Saverwang . The bel canto choir, the women's meeting place and the Bible study group testify to a lively community life. Particular mention should be made of the Antonius Chapel (Schrezheim) , which also belongs to the St. Wolfgang community: the small baroque building houses a faience altar, which is one of the main works of German faience art.
