Hachen Castle

The castle Hachenburg is the ruins of a hilltop castle on a mountain height above Hachenburg , a district of Sundern in Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Hachen Castle was built around 1000. It was first owned by Count Ezzo . In 1060 Otto von Northeim received the castle from his wife, Countess Richenza, of the Ezzonen family . Twenty years later, Otto's son, Count Kuno von Beichlingen, donated the complex to the Archbishop of Cologne in 1080 . He gave the castle as a fief to the Counts of Dassel . In 1232 the Counts of Dassel sold the castle to the Counts of Arnsberg . When the county was sold in 1368, ownership fell to the Archbishopric of Cologne again.

Around 1371, Hachen Castle was the widow's seat of the last Arnsberg Countess Anna . However, this later gave preference to Wildshausen Castle near Arnsberg. The castle became less important in the 15th century. The castle came into the possession of the Lords von Wrede , Ketteler , von Thülen , von Ledebur and von Fürstenberg . It was not until 1839 that the castle became the property of the municipality of Hachen. The war memorial next to the castle ruins was inaugurated on August 3, 1924.

The building history of the castle has not yet been adequately researched. Some drawings from the 18th and 19th centuries still show it as a towering ruin. Only a few documents about building measures from the 15th century have survived. In order to research the building history, the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments took place for the first time in 1923 and then from 1978 to 1980. A main castle area of 40 × 60 m was exposed. Below the main castle was located on a plateau a bailey . The endangered north side was protected by a 2 m thick shield wall . Behind it rose a round tower (possibly the keep ) with a diameter of 8 m. The tower was later replaced by a trapezoidal building with strong walls. There are also a few other buildings.

The protection purpose of the nature reserve is also the habitats typical of ruins, especially the rich mollusc fauna (snail fauna ). The UNB of the HSK must be involved before the renovation and maintenance of the ruins . Events on the castle ruins are permitted as long as they do not run counter to the protective purpose of the nature reserve.
