Antonius Chapel (Schrezheim)
The Antoniuskapelle in the Ellwang district of Schrezheim is famous for its faience altar , which comes from the Schrezheim porcelain factory and is one of the most important works of faience art.
history
The Antonius Chapel was donated in 1692 by the Schrezheim citizen and owner of the local brickworks Anton Friedrich Ziegler and his wife Margarete. On May 20, 1729 it was consecrated in honor of St. Anthony of Padua . In 1757 she received his relic directly from Padua . The ceiling frescoes of the chapel with scenes from the legend of the saint were created in 1821 by Josef Wintergerst and Maria Barbara Wintergerst .
Faience altar
On the canteen of the left side altar is a faience altar that was created in the Schrezheim faience factory in 1773/74 . The model comes from Johann Martin Mutschele (Bamberg). The faience tärchen, unique of its kind, a top achievement of the manufactory, is a work of art of European standing. The richly structured tabernacle base represents the last supper in purple and is bordered by a canopy-like structure. In the niche there is a colored wooden sculpture of the Madonna, which is a replica of the Madonna in the pilgrimage church of Neukirchen near the Holy Blood in the Bavarian Forest. Lush rococo ornaments with standing and floating putti , winged angel heads, volutes and rocailles round off the work of art.
