Maria Barbara Wintergerst (born February 22, 1791 in Wallerstein , † April 25, 1861 in Ellwangen , Jagstkreis ) was a German portrait , genre and miniature painter and drawing teacher .

Life

Maria Barbara, called "Babette", was the youngest daughter of the altar painter and landlord Anton Wintergerst (1737-1805) and his second wife Maria Barbara Bux († 1833), daughter of the faience manufacturer Johann Baptist Bux († 1800) from Schrezheim . She received artistic training from her father and her brother Josef Wintergerst , who had been influenced by the Nazarene in Rome from 1810 and, after working as a drawing teacher in Aarau and Ellwangen, taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1822 .

She was also a successful drawing teacher herself. She also found artistic recognition as a painter of portraits and miniature genre pieces. Together with her brother Josef, she created the ceiling frescoes to furnish the choir and nave of the St. Antonius Chapel in Elwangen-Schrezheim in 1821. Maria Barbara Wintergerst died unmarried.

Works by her have been included in the collection of the Ellwangen Castle Museum .
