St. Xavier Academy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The St. Xavier Academy is a listed school building in Winipis on the island of Moen ( Chuuk , Micronesia ).

The building was erected on a piece of land that the Catholic Church acquired from the Pwarakas clan in the 1910s. During the Second World War , the Japanese army occupied Moen Island in 1940 . The church property was confiscated in order to set up a radio and radio station there.

After the war ended, the house came under US control. It was not returned to the Catholic Church as its legal owner until 1952. In the same year the St. Xavier Catholic Seminary and High School was established in the building.

On September 30, 1976, the National Register of Historic Places listed the academy as a historic monument (National Register 76002209).
