St Leonard's-in-the-Fields

St Leonard's-in-the-Fields , formerly St Leonard's Free Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Perth in the council area of Perth and Kinross . In 1965 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also part of a category A monument ensemble.

history

In the 1870s, the Free Church of Scotland local community used a building on Victoria Street . After this turned out to be too small, planning began for a new building. The site was found in 1882. The congregation hired the Scottish-born, London- based architect John James Stevenson , who had previously designed buildings for the Free Church, to plan the new church. A mill canal at the site caused problems during the construction of the church, which was completed in 1885. Made by Bryceson Brothers & Ellis , the organ was originally installed in a church in Edinburgh and was moved to St Leonard's-in-the-Fields in 1985.

description

St Leonard's-in-the-Fields is between Scott Street and James Street on Marshall Place ( A989 ) on the south edge of Perth city center. A public park extends across the street. Due to the lack of development to the south, St Leonard's-in-the-Fields is a landmark . The neo-Gothic basilica is counted among Stevenson's most important designs. Their openings are pointed arched . Stepped buttresses along the sides structure the facade vertically. The final gable roof is covered with gray slate. The four-story bell tower on the east side closes with a crown.
