St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh

The St Margaret's Chapel (also: St. Maru's Kirk ) is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh in Scotland .

history

The chapel was built in the 12th century and is located on the highest point of Castle Rock , on which Edinburgh Castle stands. It is dedicated to Margaret of Scotland and is still used today. St Margaret's Chapel was converted into a gunners' camp in the 17th century; to the east there was another medieval chapel until the end of the 19th century. After extensive changes were made to the chapel, the original St Margaret's Chapel was rediscovered by Daniel Wilson in 1845 . It was then completely restored, in 1922 five new leaded glass windows by Douglas Strachan were installed. Another renovation took place in 1993, 900 years after Queen Margareta's death.

Legend has it that Queen Margaret was baptized in this chapel , but new research shows that the chapel was only built by her fourth son, David , who became King of Scotland in 1124 .
