St Mewan's Church

St Mewan is an Anglican parish church of the Church of England in the village of the same name on the western outskirts of St Austell in Cornwall . The church has been classified as a Grade II * cultural monument since 1967 .

history

The church, consecrated to Saint Mevennus, founder of the Abbey of Saint-Méen-le-Grand in Brittany , goes back to a Romanesque building from the 12th century, but was fundamentally rebuilt in the middle of the 15th century. It was restored by GE Street around 1851.

The oldest parts of the church are the nave and the choir, although they have been remodeled from the 15th century. The north aisle of the choir also dates from this Gothic construction period. The south aisle and vestibule were added later in the 15th century. The construction of the two floors of the massive west tower is dated to the late 15th century. During the construction work under GE Street in 1851, a north transept was built.
