St Michael and All Angels' Church

The St Michael and All Angels' Church is an Episcopal church building in the Scottish town of Helensburgh . The building is located south of the city at the intersection of West Princess Street and William Street . In 1971 St Michael and All Angels' Church was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such today.

history

The parish dates back to 1814. In 1841 a small chapel was set up in a building on William Street that could seat 220 people. Ten years later, a school was added that continued to run until 1912. In 1857 a rectory was built. Through the connection of Helensburgh to the railway network in the same year, the city grew rapidly and the previous chapel was no longer sufficient to accommodate all church members. For this reason it was decided to build a church building. As an architect, Robert Rowand Anderson was responsible for the planning. In 1868 the building was completed after a three-year construction phase. The construction cost of the then simple building was around £ 2500. However, further expansion was pushed ahead in the following decades. This included the installation of an organ by the French organ builder August Gern and the replacement of the furniture. The hall was added in 1912, and finally the bell tower was erected in 1930, with eight bells made by John Taylor & Co. of Loughborough . A chapel was added in 1958.

description

The building has architectural features of the neo-Gothic style and mimics the Gothic church architecture found in 13th century France. It is made of red sandstone that comes from the Dumfriesshire region of Scotland . On the other hand, limestone from the French Caen is used inside the building.
