St Paul's Cathedral

The St Paul's Cathedral is the cathedral of the Diocese of Brechin the Scottish Episcopal Church in the Scottish city of Dundee in the same council area . In 1963 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

It was Bishop Alexander Forbes who had the church built in 1853. It stands on the hill Castle Rock , on which the medieval fortress Dundee Castle was located. The Scottish architect George Gilbert Scott is responsible for the design . In 1865 the organ made by Hill and Son of London was installed. In 1905 the church building was made a cathedral and has since been the seat of the bishops of Brechin .

The neo-Gothic cross basilica stands on Castle Hill in the center of Dundee. Its masonry consists of irregular sandstone blocks with natural stone surrounds. The pointed arched main portal with a relief archivolt is located at the foot of the bell tower, which forms the northern end of the building. Buttresses extend along the tower, ending in ornamented stone canopies. They flank a narrow ogival tracery . Cornices with dentil divide the tower horizontally. It closes with an octagonal pointed stone helmet with hatchings . The aisles are four axes wide. A beveled apse protrudes from the south facade .
