St Valery's Cross
The St Valery's Cross (also St Valeries Cross) is a small granite cross of the Fassaroe type that was brought to its current location by an unknown original. It's in Rathmichael near Bray , in the far north of County Wicklow in Ireland .
In the Rathdown area , south of Bray, there are several Celtic crosses known as the Fassaroe Cross. One is that of Rathmichael (see picture), other Fassaroe crosses are from Killegar and Shankill . It is believed that these crosses were carved by the same stone mason in the 12th century.
The tallest is St. Valery's Cross by Fassaroe near Bray , from which the group takes its name. A large diagonal quartz ribbon runs through the shaft of the cross. The Celtic cross has an unperforated ring, is 1.42 m high and 16 cm thick. The west view shows a crude crucifixion scene, while the east view shows two rudimentary human heads. More heads are located at the bottom of the ring and at the base.
