The State Mining University in Saint Petersburg ( Russian Санкт-Петербургский горный университет Saint-Peterburgski gorny uniwersitet ) 1866-2011 Mining Institute St. Petersburg ( Russian Санкт-Петербургский горный институт St. Peterburgski gorny institute ) is the oldest technical university in Russia.

history

The college was founded in 1773 during the reign of Catherine the Great and is located in a building designed by Andrei Nikiforovich Voronikhin on the banks of the Neva . The university has been the seat of the Mineralogical Society of Russia since 1869. The university maintains its old traditions; so in the year 2000 the wearing of uniforms was reintroduced. Since 1994, the rector has been the oligarch and billionaire Vladimir Litvinenko .

The university has an extensive collection of minerals, rocks and paleontological finds.
