The State Rittmeister-Witold-Pilecki-Hochschule Oświęcim in Małopolska (Polish: Małopolska Uczelnia Państwowa im. Rotmistrza Witolda Pileckiego w Oświęcimiu ) is a Polish educational institution of the tertiary sector in Oświęcim .

history

The university was founded on July 1, 2005 by resolution of the Council of Ministers on June 7, 2005. The establishment of the university was a joint initiative of the Oświęcim District, the Lesser Poland Voivodeship and the City of Oświęcim. The Jagiellonian University in Krakow took over the patronage of the university. On November 19, 2010, it was the only university in Poland named after the Polish national hero Rittmeister Witold Pilecki , who voluntarily went to the Auschwitz concentration camp as a prisoner to find out what atrocities happened there. In 2018, a memorial was erected on campus for him.

The guiding principle of the university is that the students face up to the memory of the history of the university location, that they overcome the present problems while respecting human rights and that they build a future in peace. "The university offers Bachelor, Master and Engineering courses. All courses Students can also complete their training as part of the "Erasmus +" program at universities and colleges abroad, including in Germany, Spain, Turkey, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.

In addition to teaching and research, the State Rittmeister Witold Pilecki University organizes and hosts international congresses, panel discussions, film festivals, cultural and sporting events and open days. It is self-published, a multimedia reading room, a resident library, a children's university, a third-age university, an academic pastoral care, an academic sports association, and a student research club.

The Polish tobacco monopoly was located in the buildings of the State University before the Second World War. During the war, one of the buildings housed the first transport of 728 prisoners from a prison in Tarnów . The arrival of this transport on June 14, 1941 marks the beginning of the Auschwitz concentration camp . The courtyard in front of the building was fenced in, watchtowers were erected in the corners and it was here that the first roll call in the history of the camp took place. After prisoners were transferred to the main camp Auschwitz I, there were offices of the camp administration in the building - called the staff building - for a while, and later there were quarters for SS guards and an arsenal. A laundry room for SS men's clothing was set up in the basement. A plaque commemorating the tragic events was placed on the facade of the building. In the corridors of the Collegium Primum there is a permanent exhibition that recalls the fate of the prisoners and the transport to Auschwitz.

Since the summer semester of the academic year 2009/2010, the courses have also been held in the second university building - called Collegium sub Horologio. On April 20, 2009, during renovation work in this building, an extraordinary document from the war time was found - a message in a bottle written by camp inmates that had been set in concrete in the wall of an air raid shelter for the SS. The names of 7 prisoners who were working on the construction of the bunker were written in pencil on a piece of paper. The note is dated September 20, 1944. The camp inmates noted were between the ages of 18 and 20, six were from Poland, one from France. A copy of the letter is shown in a showcase at the site.

In 2014, the college's auditorium in the "Collegium Sub Horologio" was named after Kazimierz Piechowski, a former prisoner of Auschwitz concentration camp, who was present at the official appointment. Kazimierz Piechowski, like the college's namesake, was a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp and became famous for his spectacular escape from the camp. This escape was memorialized by the English film "Runaway". After the war he, who fought for a democratic Poland in the Home Army, was imprisoned for seven years by the communist rulers. During one of his visits to the university, he said: "When I'm here, it is as if I heard the calls of the SS men and the barking of the watchdogs. Painful memories are awakened. Nevertheless, I feel the need to come here. I am happy I am aware that these days there is such a recognized college in the buildings that were my prison, my hell and from which I escaped. This is very important to me. "

In 2019 a simulation center for health and nursing sciences was set up in the "Collegium sub Horologio" building.

In the old town of Oświęcim, a student and guest lecturer residence was completed in a historic house in 2019.
