The Høre stave church is a Norwegian stave church in Høre in Valdres in Fylke Innlandet .

history

It was first mentioned in a document as "ecclesia de Ordun" in 1327, but is dated to the second half of the 12th century. According to runic inscriptions, the tree trunks used must have been felled in 1180, because they refer to the year after the battle of Nidaros (now Trondheim ), which took place in 1179. The church had a previous building with masts that were sunk directly into the ground. Archaeological investigations found a coin from around 1100 in a post pit of the previous church. The excavations also unearthed several coins from the period from 1154 to 1202.

In the 17th century, a log tower was built next to the church.

The church was heavily rebuilt in the 19th century and therefore lost its original appearance. It was a long church with a narrower choir than the nave and an apse and a flanking portico. During the renovation work, it got a new choir in block construction and the roof turrets were removed in 1850 and they were reused at the cemetery gate. In 1970 the church was restored.

architecture

Only the corner columns of the high column construction are load-bearing. The rest of the columns are floating and end on the lower beam clamps. The supporting corner pillars have capitals carved with tendril motifs . The portals consist of carved half-columns with tendrils and animal motifs and archivolts .

Runestone

The runic text reads: “This summer, when the brothers Erling and Audun felled the trees for this church, Earl Erling fell in Nidaros.” The inscription dates the age of the stave church to the battle of Nidaros when Erling Skakke fell.
