Rapperswil City Archives
The Rapperswil City Archive is an archive of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

After the canton of St. Gallen was founded in 1803, the now independent municipalities of Rapperswil and Jona created separate archives for their documents. As a result of the unification of the two political communities, the aim is to bring together all of the historical material up to 1900 or at most 1950 in one location. The Rapperswil City Archives therefore contain the historical documents of the Rapperswil rulership and its legal successors , essentially the municipality of Rapperswil, which was independent until 2006 .
Archives holdings
The Municipal Archives includes the archives of the political community and the Ortsbürgergemeinde, with several thousand documents from 1300 in the so-called Old Archive (up to 1798) with the council and court records from 1540, some primarily of clergy wrote handwritten chronicles, Jahrzeiten- and parish books in which Baptisms, marriages and funerals are recorded from the middle of the 16th century.
Affiliated are the photo archive as well as the engraving and plan collection with some audio and film documents from the recent past, as well as private bequests and a library in which site-specific publications are collected, including newspaper articles about Rapperswil from the past 60 years.
Parts of the archive are stored in the town hall at the main square in the old town of Rapperswil . The contents of the city archive are accessible to those interested after making a reservation by telephone.
