The city library in Lüdenscheid or its predecessor, the “ People's Library of the City of Lüdenscheid”, was opened on May 10, 1857 and, with this name and the claim to be open to all social classes, was one of the older libraries in Germany. The city library itself is located in the eastern part of downtown Lüdenscheid , not far from the Wilhelmstrasse shopping area and the town hall .
history
On the initiative of culturally interested citizens, the public library was founded in the city, which then had only 5,000 inhabitants. After a collection that brought in 90 thalers and 20 silver groschen as well as book gifts, the library was able to start borrowing with 380 volumes. Since the library was a private institution, it lived on loan fees and donations. From 1868 onwards the income could be improved through musical and scientific lectures, which in 1907 enabled the expansion to include a reading room (with 47 current newspaper subscriptions). After the First World War , the public library was taken over by the city. By sending boxes of books to the front and ordered "cleansing" during the Nazi era , large gaps were torn in the inventory until 1945. In 1951 the building, which the city bought in 1936, was thoroughly renovated and redesigned. Stocks were reorganized and the old counter library was transformed into a modern open access library . The increasingly pressing need for space in the following years led to a larger extension at the end of the 1980s. In 2007 the library celebrated its 150th anniversary.
Current
Today around 130,000 media are available for use in the city library. The approximately 200,000 visitors ensure over 400,000 loans annually. In addition to books from all subject and knowledge areas, novels, bestsellers, magazines and books for children and young people, new media such as DVDs, BluRays, CD-ROMs, CDs, console games, board games, pictures and sheet music can also be borrowed.
The city library has numerous work and computer workstations in a specially furnished room. You can access the library system from home via the Internet and, for example, extend the media loan period or pre-order media online.
A reading café has been set up in the entrance area. Events such as readings, film afternoons, children's programs and exhibitions are offered regularly.
From a report by Lüdenscheider Nachrichten on April 17, 2013, it became known that, according to the city administration of Lüdenscheid, 75,000 euros must be put into the city library. This will involve the second construction phase of window renovation, the establishment of an entrance suitable for the disabled and the repair of fire doors.
User numbers from 2012
Lt. According to a press release from the homepage of the city of Lüdenscheid, the Lüdenscheid city library again reported positive results in terms of visitor numbers in 2012. In 2012 there were around 80 visitors per hour and around 200 loans of books and other media. Since there are nearby parking facilities at the city library again, visits have increased slightly again. The new online library for digital media, which can be operated from home, reported around 13,101 downloads in 2012, which is more than twice as high as in 2011. A total of 6,400 children and adults made use of their membership cards for the city library in 2012 Use and borrowed around 340,000 books as well as other media.
A particularly large number of children and young people registered in the city library in 2012. According to the city, this is a success of the intensive cooperation between the city library and schools and day-care centers for educational support and reading promotion. The cooperation with the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences , which was newly established in October, is also getting off to a good start and is bringing many of the Lüdenscheid students from the University of Applied Sciences to the Lüdenscheid train station . Around 55 percent of the city library's customers are currently under 25 years old.
