The city ​​fortification Ybbs an der Donau is the city ​​fortification in the municipality of Ybbs an der Donau in the district of Melk in Lower Austria .

history

The city fortifications were documented in 1287. The planned system with wall, towers, moat and rampart was built in the 13th and 14th centuries. Damage caused by floods in 1488 was renewed after 1496. In 1862 the Wiener Tor was destroyed by a flood and the remains burned down in 1868. In 1880 the sand gate and in 1882 the monastery gate were demolished.

Preserved structures

  • Powder Tower / Friedrichsturm: The round tower from 1480 is in the southeast corner of the old town on Wiener Straße 17, it shows quarry stone masonry and small rectangular windows.
  • Vorwerk of the former Wiener Tor: semicircular bastion with slits, next to it, part of the city wall is part of the house at Wiener Straße No. 19.
  • Bastei and breakwater Schwalleck: It stands in the northwest on the corner of the former toll house, the basement has been preserved. The former inlet was used to flood the trench with Danube water.
  • City moat: The deep moat on the outside along the partly preserved city wall encloses the old town in a semicircle.
  • Linzer Tor: On Burgplatz No. 13, fragments of a quarry stone wall have been preserved, the city wall is partly integrated into the houses, see Kirchengasse No. 13.
