The Darmstadt City Library is the library system of the public libraries of the City of Science Darmstadt .

offer

The media offer of the Darmstadt City Library includes books, CDs, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, audio books, newspapers, magazines and board games.

The offer consists of:

  • approx. 59,000 material media
  • approx. 22,000 media in the novel department
  • 159 magazines
  • 6 daily newspapers
  • approx. 25,000 audio-visual media
  • approx. 25,000 children's and youth media

The main office and the district library in Kranichstein offer internet places.

history

  • In 1879 the Darmstädter Volksbildungsverein opened a public library connected with a reading room in the club's premises at Ochsengasse 12. Children were not allowed to visit the library. Adolescents only had access from the age of 14. The demand was so great that each reader was only allowed to borrow books once a week.
  • In 1897 the library was renamed the Public Reading and Book Hall , and at the same time it moved to Luisenstrasse 20.
  • In 1901 the library was taken over by the city of Darmstadt.
  • In 1924 the library moved to Pädagogstrasse 1.
  • On September 11, 1944, the library was destroyed in an air raid.
  • In 1945 the library resumed its operations in the Goethe School.
  • In 1964 the library in the Justus Liebig House was reopened as an open access library.
  • In 1979 it was renamed Darmstadt City Library .
  • In 1994 the extension building was inaugurated after a 2-year construction period.

These two district libraries were closed by the city parliament and / or the magistrate of the “Science City Darmstadt” despite long and fierce resistance from many citizens, who also founded a citizens' initiative and collected several thousand signatures. The affected rooms have been empty since then.

Mobile library

The Darmstadt mobile library has existed since 1975 ; it is the oldest still active in Germany. The old bus drove its farewell round at the beginning of 2015 and was replaced by a modern book bus in April 2015, so that the mobile library continues to exist.

Awards

In 2004 the city library was awarded the Hessian Library Prize for "its overall concept, which includes, in particular, a strengthening of the decentralized facilities in the city districts".

Partners and Cooperations

The Darmstadt City Library has been a member of the German Library Association (dbv) since January 1st, 1958, and a member of OCLC since 2014 .

The Darmstadt City Library was supported from 1989 to 2014 by the Friends of the City Library Darmstadt eV (FDSD), which is recognized as a non-profit and worthy of funding, through a variety of activities and book flea market revenues and other donations with more than € 70,000. The association dissolved at the end of 2014 when it was deleted from the register of associations.
