history

Against dirt and trash

In the period between 1907 and 1910, on the initiative of Rabbi Aron Tänzer, the positive fight against the poisoning of young people with dirt and trash was taken up and the basis of 1000 books was collected for a good library. The inspection and development of the holdings and other organizational preparatory work was done by Rabbi Dancer in his apartment. It was not until 1912 that the “Städtische Bibliothek” found a suitable eatery in a room on the ground floor of the town hall, and on September 16, 1912, it had its first lending lesson.

The first move took place in 1913, the library moved to the higher boys' school on the corner of Schulstrasse and Kirchstrasse. The First World War not only obligated Rabbi Dancer to do other things, but also his sons, who had continued to look after the library for a while. In 1917 the library was closed and the books were packed in boxes and stored.

After his return home, Aron Tänzer declared that he was ready to take care of the library again and by 1918 had already bought around 700 books from the army for the library. Once again, his willingness to act was thwarted by the unresolved issue of space. The reopening in 1922 was followed by a temporary closure 1925–1926. Around this time there was also criticism of the content-related work of Rabbi Dancer, who finally withdrew from his commitment to the library.

A public library with a new direction

The municipal public library was opened in the commercial school in 1931, with a clear focus on the people. By 1941, the inventory grew to the unimaginable number of 4,300 books for the time, and for every inhabitant of Göppingen there was one book read every year before the course of success was interrupted by the war. In October 1946, after the Second World War , the municipal public library resumed its work in the commercial school.

The rush after the war years was so great that a year later the library was occupied full-time and opened 5 days a week, although the American lending library on Mörikestrasse had started lending in spring 1947. In 1948 a new management took over the city library with approx. 3375 volumes. In the process of building up the inventory, which was difficult in these times, the focus was on books for young people and non-fiction. In 1951 the American library was transferred to the city library with the condition that the open access system of the American library be adopted.

The lack of space determines the library work

Even after the new beginning, the library's situation was determined by tight spatial conditions. Good ideas could only be implemented late because the narrow space did not allow any changes. After a “stopover” at Kirchstrasse 13, the library moved in 1953 to the corner house at Mörikestrasse / Wilhelmstrasse. For a few years there was calm. How provisional the accommodation was, however, was shown by the fact that the library conquered room after room of the former residential building over the next few years. In 1956 the children were given their own reading room. The adult readers wanted to emancipate themselves and choose their books themselves from the shelf. For the redesign of the magazine library for open access library , however, the room was missing. From 1961 onwards, readers' complaints appeared in the press about the lack of space in the library:

"So that everyone understands me correctly: I like to get a few bruises if I only get the book I want for that"

- Letter to the editor : NWZ: March 10, 1961

There was a desire for work tables in school circles. Conversions in 1965 and 1966, and the inclusion of a second floor, created a little relief. The top floor was later expanded as a working library for schoolchildren. It was not until 1965 to 1968 that the conversion to the open access library finally succeeded. The clear change in the self-image of library work was commented on as follows:

“How did Göppingen's bookworms behave towards the 25,000 books which, arranged in a certain system and broken down by card indexes, mean a volume that the reader can hardly keep track of? ... The rapid increase in use makes it clear that the new form of work corresponds to the mentality of today's people "

- NWZ: March 14, 1968

.

The question of space occupied the political bodies again and again. The Wilhelmstrasse building did not meet the requirements of the city library. The static load limit was exceeded as early as 1972: the rearrangement of shelves was prohibited, and old books were required to be removed when new books were purchased. According to one expert, even a class tour with 25–30 children could become a source of danger. In addition, in 1978 the right to use the building had to be renegotiated.

Perspectives for a sustainable library

In 1976, following the example of other cities, the Adelberger Kornhaus came up for discussion as a new possible domicile for the city library, a cultural monument and an important historical building. The decision was taken in October 1977. After a long period of renovation, the opening was celebrated in the Adelberger Kornhaus on November 6, 1981.

Since November 2006, the Göppingen City Library has been equipped with three self- checking machines ( RFID technology), which are used by the customer. After a further renovation phase in 2009, it can also be returned using two more machines.

New media are changing the inventory:
