The Berenbostel city cemetery in Garbsen , Berenbostel district , is located on the corner of Dorfstrasse and Auf dem Schacht .

history

Although the area around today's town of Garbsen includes "one of the most significant and at the same time most clearly arranged prehistoric sites in Lower Saxony", the traces of which contain evidence of all the cultures found in this area between the last Ice Age and the Middle Ages, the town of Berenbostel did not have its own cemetery for centuries also no own church. The residents of Berenbostel therefore visited the Martinskirche in the Engelbostel district, which is part of Langenhagen today , for baptisms, weddings and confirmations . However, the Berenbostelers began their funeral ceremonies in the house of the deceased, where the corpses were usually laid out first and, after the funeral ceremony, accompanied by a funeral procession to the grave site in the Engelbostel cemetery.

It was only after the First World War and during the Weimar Republic that the farmers Meyer and Finke made land available in 1926 to build what was initially a small cemetery.

When the population of Berenbostel rose sharply after the Second World War , mainly due to the influx of numerous refugees and displaced persons , the previous cemetery area soon became too narrow for further deaths. Therefore, the Berenbosteler organized a collection, with the money they could buy more land to expand the cemetery and - in their own work - even build the small chapel in the area of the old cemetery.
