City Hall (Düren)

The building behind the monument

The former town hall was located in Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . The remainder of the building was at Bismarckstrasse 15.

The foundation stone was laid on March 1st, 1954. The inauguration was on December 3rd, 1955. The town hall was built by the architect Prof. Hans Mehrtens from Aachen. It was a building formed from one to three-storey cubes. In the brick facade there were white wooden windows, some with concrete frames. A light canopy hung over the main entrance. The ballroom was hexagonal and had a wood-paneled ceiling.

In 2007 the building was given to an investor in a 50-year leasehold contract . He planned to build a four-star hotel there, including the listed building. The operator should be a Dutch hotel company. After the extensions were torn down and a floor slab was built for the hotel extension, all work was stopped as the financial crisis made the Düren location too unsafe for investors. The investor had undertaken to build the hotel by February 28, 2011, but that did not happen. On September 28, 2011, the city council decided to buy back the building or its ruins. However, for legal reasons, the contract was not signed by the city of Düren within the contractually stipulated period. The leaseholder then withdrew from the contract. On October 30, 2012, the leasehold was sold to a potential investor to build a hotel with retail space. The city refused to give its consent to this transfer of heritable building rights because, for reasons of urban development, it did not agree to the establishment of a "Kaufland" market on the property. Thus, the district court of Düren was asked to approve the sale in accordance with Section 7 (2) of the Heritable Building Rights Act so that the planned construction work can be carried out. The heritable building right holder has finally lost the relevant process (judgment of the Cologne Higher Regional Court ). In the meantime, the property has been approved for development and use for living, care for the elderly, etc. by the master plan of the city of Düren and the council resolution of April 9, 2014 (see draft resolution 2014-0116). This new plan called for the demolition of the old town hall.

After the town hall had been in ruins for many years, the demolition work on the no longer listed building began on March 30, 2015. The district is planning a four-star hotel, a service and congress center and a building with condominiums, medical practices and tax consultancy firms on the site.

The lettering Stadthalle Düren with the last letter A hanging down comes to the City Museum Düren. The building was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Düren under no. 1/113.
