Bismarckstrasse (Düren)

The street begins at the junction with Schützenstraße and ends at Schoellerstraße , the through-town of Bundesstraße 56 .
The street climbs steeply for the last 75 meters to Schoellerstraße and is therefore closed to heavy traffic in this area.
On Bismarckstrasse are or were
- the district house with the district administration
- the Theodor-Heuss-Park with the Wirteltorgymnasium behind it and the Bismarck monument, with Bismarck looking out over the street dedicated to him. The listed statue used to be in the middle of the intersection with Moltkestrasse.
- the municipal Rurtalgymnasium
- the St. Angela School
- the former town hall , which was a listed building and had to give way to a hotel and residential complex in 2017/2018.
The first indoor swimming pool in Düren was also located in Bismarckstraße, and after a renovation it was called the city pool . It was demolished in 1998. After many years as an unsightly excavation pit, an auxiliary building for the district administration was built there.
history
Prince Otto von Bismarck (1815–1898) was a German statesman and one of only eight honorary citizens of the city of Düren . The city council passed a resolution on March 21, 1895.
The Düren factory owner and councilor Philipp Schoeller (1833–1904) had built a villa on today's Wirteltorplatz , which borders the Schützenstraße / Bismarckstraße confluence. He provided the city with the site for the construction of Bismarckstrasse free of charge. The expansion began in 1892.
The renovation of the road began on July 9, 2018.
