The St. Angela School is a grammar school and a secondary school in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

The school has three special features:

  1. Until July 31, 2018, it was an all- girls school from grammar school and secondary school.
  2. It was a substitute school, i.e. a privately owned school. On August 1, 2018, the diocese of Aachen took over the sponsorship in full. The St. Angela School has been a church school since August 1st, 2018.
  3. In the school's religious instruction (Catholic or Protestant) Required.

On August 2, 1681, two nuns from Liège came to Düren, namely Sister M. Clara Magnèe and M. Dorothèe de Sluysce, and founded an Ursuline monastery here. From 1681 to 1686 the Ursulines lived for rent, first from August 1681 to approx. 1682 in the Schwarzenbroich house in Schellengasse (today Wilhelmstrasse ). After that, they lived on Weierstrasse for a few months . From around 1682 until the move to the lower Kölnstrasse, the Ursulines were in the Bobbeler Burg on the cattle market (today Kaiserplatz ). It was not until 1686 that the nuns bought the Spetgensche house in the lower Kölnstrasse near the Kölntor in the so-called dead end, the later Dörrsgasse.

Within a few years, more and more properties were acquired in the vicinity and a school , a boarding school and a church were built here. In 1798, Karl Theodor , Elector of Bavaria, confirmed to the Ursulines that the order “is very useful to the common being, one should diligently accept children who love such people, are able to continue peace and unity” . After the introduction of compulsory schooling for children up to the age of 14 in 1825, the Düren city council transferred all girls' elementary schools to the Ursulines in 1829 . The school came to its current location in 1927 via school buildings on Kölnstrasse and Zehnthofstrasse . A private girls' middle school (Realschule) was set up there in 1927, the Gymnasium in 1931. After the Second World War , classes began again on November 26, 1945. In 1957 the new boarding school was opened. It existed until the 1992/93 school year. After the upper school reform in 1974, there was only a private grammar school in addition to the Realschule . On January 1, 2000, the sponsorship of the St. Angela School went to the “St. Angela-Schulgesellschaft mbH “about; The partners are the Diocese of Aachen , the Ursulines Düren eV and the association for co-sponsorship of the St. Angela School eV

In 2008, a working group at the St. Angela School was awarded the Brigitte Gilles Prize for its ongoing support for young women in the natural sciences .

Since August 1, 2018, there have also been boys in school. On the same date, the sponsorship of the school was transferred to the diocese of Aachen. Headmaster is Olaf Windeln. The school is now called the Episcopal St. Angela School .
