The Wilhelmstrasse in the district town Düren ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ) is an ancient city road .
location
The street connects Ahrweilerplatz , crosses Weierstraße and Kaiserplatz to Schenkelstraße .
history
Wilhelmstrasse was known as Schellengasse or Glockengasse in the Middle Ages . Many bell makers worked in this street . They were of particular importance to Düren. The products were sold in the 16th century to Braunschweig, Thuringia and Saxony, for example.
The Schellengasse used to end as a dead end at the city wall . In 1825 a gate was broken so that access to Schenkelstrasse was possible. On August 25, 1882, the city council passed the resolution to rename Schellengasse to Wilhelmstrasse. The name goes back to Wilhelm I , the King of Prussia. On November 12, 1953, it was decided to also designate the part between Kaiserplatz and Ahrweilerplatz as Wilhelmstrasse.
The Schellengasse tower , which has now completely disappeared, stood between Wilhelmstrasse and Philippstrasse .
