Wirteltorplatz (Düren)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wirteltorplatz is a core of busy square in downtown Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Wirtelstrasse , Schützenstrasse and Josef-Schregel-Strasse flow into the square . The Bismarck Street , coming from the east, and the legs road from the west, form the Wirteltorplatz a continuous road train with up to four lanes.

Before the war the square was called Verkehrsplatz. The villa of the Schoeller family of manufacturers from Düren stood there until November 16, 1944 . From 1928 to 1929 the Wirteltor high-rise was built on the east side of the square. It was the tallest building in Düren and was very modern in design. During the air raid on November 16, 1944 , it was destroyed and not rebuilt.

The Wirteltränkenkreuz has been on the square since 2008 . At the end of the square in the direction of Josef-Schregel-Straße stood the Wirteltor , one of the five city gates of the Düren city fortifications . Wenzel Hollar calls the city gate "Weilerpfort" in his city map from 1634. The gate was demolished in 1834. There are five stumbling blocks in the square in memory of murdered Jewish fellow citizens.

The transition from Wirteltorplatz to Josef-Schregel-Straße is barely recognizable.

Events are often held on Wirteltorplatz, such as B. the Christmas fair and the start of the carnival.
