The cross

The Wirteltränkenkreuz is a memorial on Wirteltorplatz in Dueren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the past, the cross stood at the whorl's trough and reminded passers-by to quiet devotion. The whirlpool was a 53 × 13 m pool, which was fed by the city stream . The basin not only served as a cattle trough, but was also used to draw off service and extinguishing water. It was across from the Jewish cemetery on Arnoldsweilerstrasse .

The wrought-iron cross, 4.50 m high and 1.00 m wide, was erected on December 10, 1708. A gilded body of Christ is located on an iron pole. Forged tendrils are attached to the post. In the center of the stake is a plaque with the following text: Effigiem Christi, cum transis, semper honora - non tamen effigiem, sed quem designat adora. (As you pass by, give honor to the image of Christ - but do not worship the image, but the one it represents).

In 1873 the cross was removed in the course of the expansion of the Eisenbahnstraße and three years later it was rebuilt in the former cemetery, today Konrad-Adenauer-Park, in the Kölnstraße . In 2008 the monument was re-erected on Wirterltorplatz opposite the Kaufhof after an extensive renovation. A bronze plaque indicates the eventful history of the cross.

The cross is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Düren under no. 1/143 .
