The Josef-Schregel road in the district town Düren ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a city road .

location

The street is in the north of the city . It runs from Wirteltorplatz past Langemarkpark and Düren train station to the confluence of Neue Jülicher Strasse and Alte Jülicher Strasse . The road is crossed by bridges, on which the tracks of the high-speed line Cologne – Aachen and the Rurtalbahn run.

history

Wenzel Hollar referred to the street in his map from 1634 as "Weg nach Gülich". This path has always been of great importance because it connected the old ruler's seat of Jülich with the residence in Nideggen . At the time of the French occupation from 1794 to 1815 the street was called “Rue de Juliers”. The street was also called "Düren-Heinsberger-Straße". It gained particular importance when the Cologne - Aachen railway line was inaugurated on September 1, 1841.

From 1908 to 1944 the tram of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB) traveled the southern part of Josef-Schregel-Straße from the train station to Wirteltorplatz. The double-track line led from the train station to the market, there were stops at Hortplatz and Wirteltorplatz (formerly Schenkelstraße). The line was not rebuilt after the war.

The previous Eisenbahnstraße was named after Adolf Hitler from April 6, 1933 to 1945, like many streets in Germany . After the Second World War it was initially called Eisenbahnstrasse again. On January 30, 1947, it was renamed in memory of the Düren honorary citizen Josef Schregel . At the house at Josef-Schregel-Straße 40 there is a memorial plaque that refers to the Düren local poet. From 1893, the meter-gauge line to Birkesdorf of the Dürener Eisenbahn (DEAG) ran almost directly north of the DKB line . After the war, this route was to be extended south towards the city center, which, apart from the first construction work, was never realized. The line was finally closed in 1965.

There was a cinema at Josef-Schregel-Straße 4 until the 1980s, the Schauburg .

Todays use

The Düren train station is east of the street. The central bus station (ZOB) is located next to the train station . Opposite him is the house of the city . Nearby is Langemarck Park, known as the place of residence of drug addicts. The entire northern part of Josef-Schregel-Strasse around the station is considered unattractive by the population, also because numerous betting offices, amusement arcades and other low-cost shops are now located there instead of the former owner-managed shops. In the further course of the street towards the city is the Posthotel, which was formerly the Kolping House . In the place of the former cinema there is now a shopping arcade.
