The town house I in Hagen was a savings bank and city administration building from the post-war period . The headquarters of the Sparkasse Hagen and numerous offices of the city of Hagen were located there. It was demolished in 2004.

On August 29, 2014 a book (Beloved, Hated, Blasted) about this building complex was published.

History of the savings bank part

The center of the house was shaped by a mighty, 50-meter-long ticket hall, which was equipped with tasteful lighting and comfortable seating. In the basement, which could be reached by stairs from the ticket hall, was the savings bank safe, which was equipped with the most modern security devices. A staircase led from the vault to the main cash desk. The archive rooms were connected to the anteroom. In the basement there was also a workshop for the Sparkasse's machine park. In 1973 the ticket hall was extensively rebuilt and expanded in a time-typical manner. Furthermore, the lower part of the front and a side part facing Badstrasse were modernized.

History of the urban part

In the basement of the urban part there was a bookbinding, two caretaker apartments, a storage room for film equipment and projector. In the basement of the health department there was a filing room, a medical examination room (in which school examinations were carried out), a preparation room and a waiting room. The health department had an area of 305 square meters on the ground floor.

Construction and dimensions

The construction was started by Fritz Norkauer on February 15, 1951 and completed on November 29, 1952. In its U-shape, the building was divided into two large sections:
a) the savings bank section,
b) the urban administration section.

The length of the building on Körnerstrasse and Volmeufer was 80 meters each, the length on Badstrasse 60 meters. Both components were 14 meters deep and 17 meters high from the top edge of the pavement to the top edge of the roof. The enclosed space was around 56,500 cubic meters, of which the Sparkasse accounted for around 31,000 cubic meters.

The 56,000 cubic meter enclosed space was illuminated by daylight through 1,400 windows.

In 1968 the town house I was given a new facade to give the building a more contemporary look. This consisted of slates as well as stainless steel reliefs over the side entrances. The formerly open side of the courtyard was closed by the addition of the Long Oscar. a. the board members their parking spaces.
