The Protestant town church Pößneck was originally built in the Gothic style and later changed in Pößneck in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia . It belongs to the Protestant parish Pößneck in the Schleiz parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The town church Pößneck was first mentioned in 1349. The original patronage was Bartholomew and was later changed to Mauritius . The Reformation was introduced in Pößneck as early as 1527.

The church consists of an elongated, flat-roofed nave, into which the tower and a patron s lodge intervene in the southeast , and the choir with net vault, which is separated from the nave by the triumphal arch . The year 1390 is recorded as the start of construction; In addition, there are inscriptions on the building from the second half of the 15th century. The simple tower has a pointed helmet with four smaller points. On the roof of the nave there are two ridge turrets with a lantern and a hood.

The choir with a five-eighth end shows late Gothic details, for example a late Gothic sacrament niche . Remains of medieval wall paintings are also preserved in the choir. However, the shapes of the vault ribs have raised doubts as to whether they actually come from the Middle Ages. It is possible that the structure was damaged by fire, which could also explain the flat ceiling of the nave and the lack of window tracery. The interior is mainly characterized by a redesign between 1811 and 1813. Restoration work has been carried out since 1978.

Furnishing

The lack of Gothic furnishings is partly attributed to an iconoclasm in 1523 and partly to fires. In the aforementioned redesign, a wooden baptism in empire shapes was added. A special feature is the clock with the signs of the zodiac in the north wall of the tower. The other pieces of equipment such as stained glass in the choir, stalls and organ come from the 19th century.

The organ with a neo-Gothic prospect is a work by the Kreutzbach company from 1896, which was enlarged to 54 registers in 1926 by the Jehmlich company . It was renewed between 2011 and 2015.
