Building history

Zwinger Stadtmauer Staßfurt

The Staßfurt city wall was built around the former settlement of Altstaßfurt between 1427 and 1467 after the granting of town and market rights in 1180 , later this was reinforced by another parallel wall, creating a kennel in the space. With the exception of the north side, the city was completely surrounded by the outer and inner city walls, the north side, however, only by a moat; In addition, the wall was surrounded by roundabouts at the corners, the largest roundabout in Golnowstrasse has been preserved to this day; The defense towers were built directly into the inner city wall. The city gates, Magdeburger Tor, Wassertor and Ascherslebener Tor, were also protected by defense towers. The city was protected from the north by the Bodelauf , in the east by strong fortifications, in the south by the widespread marshland and in the west by the heavily fortified castle .

The gonadal system in today's Gollnowstrasse was, like the other roundels, placed at the corners of the city wall and strongly fortified, as this side was the best way to attack the city's enemies. In the meantime, however, the roundabout was also used as a defense structure in the Thirty Years' War and is still one of the largest defense structures in the German-speaking area. It currently serves as a historical museum.
