The Stadtsparkasse Meiningen was the municipal savings bank for the former royal capital of Saxony-Meiningen and later county town of Meiningen in southern Thuringia . In 1940 it merged with the Kreissparkasse Meiningen .

history

The Städtische Sparkasse Meiningen was founded on April 1, 1826. Since 1822 there was an effort to establish a municipal savings bank in the capital and residence city. According to the order of Duke Bernhard II of Saxony-Meining on September 22, 1825, the savings bank should serve as a "useful means of reducing poverty, in particular to prevent people from becoming poor". On March 14, 1826, the ordinance for the establishment of a savings bank in the residential town of Meiningen appeared (No. 13 of the register sheet 1826).

The savings bank was initially located in the town hall and came under municipal administration in 1836. Savings deposits rose from 407 thalers in 1926 to 10,204 thalers in 1846 and 15,788 thalers in 1874. After the introduction of the mark, savings amounted to 36,637 (1875), 138,000 (1886), 305,956 (1903) and 1,402,700 in 1917 In 1916, on the initiative of Mayor Hermann Keßler , the Sparkasse broke away from the town hall operations and moved directly to the former Heerdmannsche Haus on the market square next to the town hall, which they thoroughly modernized in 1929. In 1923 the Sparkasse opened a branch in Bibra (Grabfeld) and took over the Stadtsparkasse Wasungen , which it continued as a branch. After the hyperinflation of the paper mark in 1924, the savings deposit amounted to 700,315 of the new Reichsmark . In 1940 the Städtische Sparkasse merged with the Kreissparkasse Meiningen. In 1945 the savings bank building was destroyed in an air raid.
