Hermann Keßler (politician, 1866)

Hermann Keßler (born May 2, 1866 in Ostheim before the Rhön ; † April 18, 1951 in Meiningen ) was a lawyer and Lord Mayor of the cities of Meiningen and Sonneberg .

After his childhood in Ostheim vd Rhön, Hermann Keßler graduated from high school in Weimar . He then studied law at the universities in Jena , Berlin and Munich . During his studies in 1885 he became a member of the Germania Jena fraternity . He completed his studies in 1893 with an assessor exam . In 1894 Hermann Keßler settled in Sonneberg as a lawyer and notary. There he was appointed mayor in 1909 .

From 1916 to 1933 Hermann Keßler was Lord Mayor of Meiningen . Immediately after taking office, he promoted the creation of the first allotment gardens in the city and in 1918 campaigned for the maintenance of the ensemble at the Meininger Theater , which was endangered by the consequences of the First World War. After the November Revolution, the Meiningen Workers 'and Soldiers' Council asked him to resign. With the support of Reichswehr Minister Gustav Noske , however, he was able to maintain his position as Lord Mayor.

Hermann Keßler arranged for the private daughter schools to be merged in Meiningen and advocated the stationing of Reichswehr troops in the Meiningen barracks , which were empty after the dissolution of the 2nd Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 32 in December 1918. He made great contributions to the opening of the Meininger airfield in 1927 and the construction of several new suburban settlements from 1932. Hermann Kessler was long-term chairman of the Thuringian Association of Cities and a member of the German Association of Cities .
