The Stadttheater Steyr is a theater on Volksstrasse in the municipality of Steyr in Upper Austria . It also serves as a cinema .

history

On May 28, 1898, the building was opened as the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph Industry and Trade Exhibition Hall . In 1924 this was converted into a people's cinema and concert hall with 900 seats. In 1951 it was converted according to plans by architect Piffl.

Since the old city theater in the Steyr Church of the Cölestines near Berggasse was too small and outdated, the old stage wing was demolished in 1957/1958 and a modern stage was added to the hall of the industrial hall according to the plans of the architect Karl von Tobisch-Labotýn . The theater opened on September 27, 1958 with Puccini's La Boheme .
