In addition to Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall, the SHB also includes the two municipal companies HGE Haller Grundstücks- und Ernahmungsgesellschaft mbH and GWG Grundstücks- und Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH Schwäbisch Hall.

Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall generate electricity and heat in combined heat and power plants and from renewable energy. The company supplies electricity, natural gas, heat and water, operates two natural gas filling stations, several electric charging stations as well as pools and parking facilities. Energy management services and billing software for municipalities, heat suppliers, network operators, municipal utilities and other energy sales companies are offered under the SHERPA-X brand. Technical services are offered under the name ASCARI, such as the connection of systems and energy networks to the Schwäbisch Hall network control room for monitoring and control. The technical services also include the planning, financing, construction and operation of energy generation and heating systems ( contracting ).

Network area

The network area of Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH extends over the cities and communities of Schwäbisch Hall, Michelbach, Rosengarten, Michelfeld, Mainhardt, Wüstenrot, Untermünkheim and Braunsbach.

electricity

Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall attaches great importance to environmental friendliness and sustainability when generating energy. Combined heat and power systems and renewable energies such as photovoltaics, hydropower, wind energy and biomass play an essential role:

Electricity generation in the network area of Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH totaled 266,720 MWh in 2017 and was divided as follows:

  • Combined heat and power (60,009 MWh)
  • Photovoltaics (56,289 MWh)
  • Biomass (77,746 MWh)
  • Hydropower (7,887 MWh)
  • Wind power (64,790 MWh)
  • Electricity output in the network area: 383 GWh
  • Electricity trading volume: 1,724 GWh

Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH sells electricity under the PremiumStrom brand .

Since 2015, the Kohlenstraße wind farm southeast of the city on the Kohlenstraße in the Limpurger Mountains has been operated with seven Vestas V126-3.3MW turbines (a total of 23 MW nominal output). The northernmost turbine belongs to the Hohenlohe community wind farm. The systems fed in a total of 50,197 MWh in 2017.

The two-part Rote Steige wind farm has been built west of the city of Schwäbisch Hall since 2017. The public utility had carried out the preliminary planning, but another company was also involved in the tenders. To the north of Bundesstrasse 14 in the Michelfeld district , Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall built two Vestas 136 turbines with 3.45 MW each (hub height: 149 meters, rotor diameter: 136 meters, total height: 217 meters) in 2017. The construction of a third plant was completed in 2018. An annual electricity yield of around 26.2 million kWh is expected, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of over 6,500 four-person households. To the south of the B14 in the Mainhardt district , Uhl Windkraft built three systems of the same type.

As a pioneer of the energy transition, Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall also commissioned a battery storage system from Siemens with a capacity of 1 MW and a storage depth of 1.4 MWh in 2017.

gas

In 1860, the city council of Schwäbisch Hall dealt with the construction of a municipal gasworks for the first time. In 1863 the Schwäbisch Hall gasworks produced 63,000 cubic meters of gas. At this time, the gas network began to be expanded. Back then, the gas was extracted from coal and used to illuminate the streets and alleys. In 1891, 26 m 3 of gas were emitted per head of the population , in 1901 it was already 40 m 3 , which was mainly (54%) for private lighting, as utility gas (29%), for street lighting (10%) and for the Own operation of the gas works (1.5%) was used. In December 1962, the previous gas generation process was replaced by a new liquefied gas cracking system and in 1971 expanded with a mixing system that produced a gas with a higher calorific value. The new gasworks in Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental was inaugurated at the end of March 1972. In 1982 Schwäbisch Hall was connected to the Stuttgart - Schwäbisch Hall - Crailsheim natural gas pipeline. Today, natural gas is mainly used for heating, but also for cooking, in trade and for operating natural gas vehicles.

water

In 1957 the city of Schwäbisch Hall was connected to the "Nordost" long-distance water supply. At the same time, our own groundwater extraction was expanded. The demand of 126 liters per second at that time was covered by 76 liters from the Kocher river and 50 liters from the northeast water supply. In 1976 the requirements for drinking water are regulated by law. In 1997, 70% of the water came from the river water treatment plant near Uttenhofen, which was closed in 1999. Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH has been cooperating with the NOW water supply association for Northeast Württemberg in Crailsheim and the beaver water group in Michelfeld since 2006. Most of the water for Schwäbisch Hall comes from the NOW waterworks near Langenau in Donau-Ries.

Water supply to end consumers (2017): 2,886 thousand m 3

warmth

The first considerations for the use of local heating came up in Schwäbisch Hall at the beginning of the 1970s, when planning the Teurershof building area. In 1991, the expansion of block-type thermal power stations in Schwäbisch Hall was accelerated. The Bausparkasse and large parts of the city center have been connected to local heating since 1996, the existing local heating islands were connected to one another and a large local heating network was created.

This combined heat and power network and the combined heat and power system in Schwäbisch Hall are key technologies for making generation more flexible in the course of the energy transition. Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall has now installed around 60 combined heat and power plants with an electrical output of around 30 megawatts.

50% of the heat that is fed into the heating network is generated from bioenergy.

Heat emission (year 2017): 152 GWh

Baths

Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall operates the Schenkenseebad in Schwäbisch Hall, the indoor pool in Michelbach / Bilz and the outdoor pool in Rosengarten Rieden. The Haller Stadtwerke hold a 60% stake in the saltwater pool in Schwäbisch Hall.

There is a leisure pool, a sauna park, an outdoor pool and a fitness center on the grounds of the Schenkenseebad. The bowling center in the immediate vicinity is also part of the Schwäbisch Hall municipal utilities.

Visitors to the Schenkensee leisure pool (2017): 301 thousand

Visitors to the Schenkensee swimming pool (year 2017): 103 thousand

Sauna park visitors (2017): 57 thousand

Parking

The entry into the parking garage operation took place in 2001, when trade tax income for the city of Schwäbisch Hall collapsed because the profits of a large local banking and insurance company flowed to Frankfurt. 80 percent of the city's income is now missing from the city's budget.

In order to relieve the city budget, the city is selling four parking garages to Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall GmbH. The other parking facilities remain with the city, but are operated by the municipal utilities. Together with a software company, the Haller Stadtwerke are starting to develop software for cash register systems in the area of bathrooms and parking and are introducing the “HallCard”.

In 2017, over 18,000 of these cards were in circulation. Since 2017, all new HallCard customers have also received a UHF sticker. This technology ensures that the barriers in the parking facilities open automatically when you approach.

In addition to the HallCard, there is also the option of purchasing a ticket as a long-term parker. This is mainly used by residents of downtown Schwäbisch Hall and employees who work in the city.
