Function: lighthouse
Construction time: 1859
Operating time: 1859 to 1935

Pencarrow Lighthouse is no longer in operation lighthouse on Pencarrow Head in the region Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand . The first permanently operated lighthouse in New Zealand marks the eastern approach to Wellington Harbor . After two wooden markings erected in 1841 fell victim to the elements, a makeshift beacon was erected and looked after by a pair of lighthouse keepers.

The cast iron lighthouse was made in England and came to New Zealand in segments in June 1858. It was put into operation on January 1, 1859. The wife of lighthouse keeper Mary Bennett, who died in a boat accident in 1855, became New Zealand's first official lighthouse keeper.

Since the cliff on which the tower stands is often shrouded in fog, the construction of a new lighthouse directly on the coast began in 1906. The old tower continued to operate until June 18, 1935, when the Baring Head Lighthouse went into operation.

The New Zealand Post issued a 50 cent postage stamp for the lighthouse in 2009.

On March 18, 1982, the tower was registered as Historic Place Category I by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust under number 34.
