Castle Point Lighthouse

Castle Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse near the village of Castle Point east of Masterton in the region Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand . It is operated by Maritime New Zealand and serves as a landmark for ships calling at Wellington Harbor from South America .

The cylindrical white tower was the last New Zealand lighthouse made in England and brought to New Zealand in sections. It was put into operation on January 12, 1913 and initially lit by an oil lamp . In 1954 the tower was electrified and powered by a diesel generator. In 1961 it was connected to the national power grid. In 1988, the tower was one of the last New Zealand lighthouses to be automated and the lighthouse keepers removed. Since then, like all New Zealand lighthouses, it has been remotely controlled from a central control room at Maritime New Zealand's headquarters in Wellington .

Because of its location near Castlepoint Beach, a popular holiday destination, the tower is also a sight. The tower was given because of the proximity to the already existing at the time of building the village with their civilizing amenities - unlike the other most remote islands or accessible only by sea cliffs standing lighthouses - from the lighthouse keepers nicknamed The Holiday Light ( "The Holiday Lighthouse ").

After the lighthouse keeper fell from a ladder during repair work in 1922 and was killed, there were stories for several years that his ghost appeared in the lighthouse keeper's house.
