Tiritiri Matangi Lighthouse is a lighthouse on the island of Tiritiri Matangi on the Hauraki Gulf 28 km north of Auckland in the Auckland region on the North Island of New Zealand . It is operated by Maritime New Zealand .
The lighthouse with its outbuildings is considered to be the best preserved lighthouse complex in New Zealand. and is the oldest operating lighthouse in the country. It was the third permanent lighthouse in the country and at times the most powerful lighthouse in the southern hemisphere.
The tower, built of cast iron in 1864, was put into operation on January 1st, 1865 and initially lit by an oil lamp . In 1925 the tower was automated with the help of a rotating acetylene burner . The tower was manned again from 1947 to 1984. Then it was automated again. The last lighthouse keeper, Ray Walter, remained on the island until his retirement in 2006, working with his wife Barbara as a ranger for the Department of Conservation .
The island and the nearby visitor center are open to the public, the interior of the tower is not. Like all New Zealand lighthouses, the tower is remotely controlled from a central control room at Maritime New Zealand's headquarters in Wellington .
On June 25, 1992, the tower was registered as Historic Place Category I by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust under number 5403.
