Cape Egmont Lighthouse is a lighthouse on Cape Egmont in South Taranaki District in the Taranaki region on the North Island of New Zealand . It is operated by Maritime New Zealand .
The lighthouse was built in 1864 by Simpson & Co. in the London borough of Pimlico and originally erected the following year on Mana Island northwest of Porirua . However, since it was confused with the lighthouse on Pencarrow Head at the entrance to Wellington Harbor , the tower was dismantled in 1877 and rebuilt on Cape Egmont.
The tower was automated in 1986 and, like all New Zealand lighthouses, has since been remotely controlled from a control room at Maritime New Zealand's headquarters in Wellington .
On December 11, 2003, the tower was registered as a Category 2 Historic Place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust under number 802.
